The Nikkor 16mm was made for Nikon's Fx series of cameras. If your shooting with the Nikon D700, D3 or the D3x and your finding for a fisheye lens then the Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Fisheye is just what your finding for. You will not get a true fisheye ensue with this lens on Dx Cameras. For Nikon Dx Slr's you need Nikon's 10.5mm fisheye lens.
The Nikkor 16mm is a "full frame" 180 degree diagonal fisheye lens which maps a rectangular image onto a full frame (1.0x Crop) sensor rather than a circular one. Nikon does not organize circular fisheye lenses. If that's what your finding for you'll have to turn to Sigma.

Image quality of the Nikkor 16mm Fisheye
This is a selected fisheye lens with superb image quality. If your a Nikon shooter it doesn't get better than this. If your a pro or serious hobbyist and you quiz, the best image quality then the Nikkor 16mm is unquestionably your only choice.
Image sharpness and discrepancy are very good but with a tendency to be a exiguous soft around the edges and corners when shooting wide open at f/2.8. This is a normal truism of most fisheyes and not particular to this lens. Best results are obtained by shooting in the middle of f/5.6 and f/8.
Nikon keeps ghosting and flaring down to a bare minimum with it's Extra-low Dispersion glass element. Chromatic aberration (Ca) is hardly worth mentioning and you'll never notice it except under greatest high discrepancy situations. Nikon has outdone all of its competitors is this department.
Features of the Nikkor 16mm Fisheye Lens
Constructed with 8 elements in 5 groups the Nikkor 16mm is a small lens weighing in at only 10 ounces with an widespread length of just over 2 inches with a 2.5 inch diameter barrel. It may be small but this Nikon fisheye lens is tough, compact, and well built.
With a Close Focusing length of 9.8 inches you can't get as close as most other high-end fisheyes but most photographers have no desire to get in that close anyways. Like the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye, the Nikkor 16 has Nikons Close Range revision (Crc) technology for more literal, focusing at short distances.
In order to focus at infinity with this lens you need to have one of the rear gelatin filters in place. Three gelatin filters are in case, granted by Nikon when you buy the lens but you should rarely have to focus this lens at infinity because of the greatest depth of field you get with a fisheye lens to begin with.
Because of its small size auto focus is very fast on the Nikkor 16mm; and it comes with a manual override for those siutations where Af just won't cut it.
Is the Nikon Fisheye for You?
Most photographers like to stick with their own brands when it comes to buying a new lens for inescapable reasons: third party lenses more often than not don't fully combine with your own cameras systems. If you fall into this type and your shooting with a Nikon full frame camera ideas and you want the best image quality inherent then the Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Fisheye Lens will be your amount one choice.
The only other lens that can compete with it in terms of image quality is the Sigma 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens with a Nikon mount. The Sigma 15mm will cost about 0.00 less than this Nikon fisheye lens will. I consider the Sigma 15mm to be a close second.
Whether you go with the best or second best you can't go wrong with either one as both are great lenses!
